Commentary: New York state can act to curb ICE's excesses. But we've got to do it right.

Most calls to our office these days concern the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who are indiscriminately rounding up people in the course of President Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant zealotry. Constituents are demanding the state Legislature do something.

Some of their proposals: barring state law enforcement from cooperating with ICE; banning ICE agents from wearing masks; and requiring ICE agents to wear identifying information. Democrats share the objectives of all three proposals. However, it’s essential that they conform to our existing laws and don’t attempt to solve one set of problems by causing another.
