Commentary: Colleges' merger will expand opportunities and strengthen the Capital Region

Higher education institutions nationwide are grappling with a stark reality: Not only are there fewer college-going high school graduates, thanks to declining birthrates and other factors, but many Americans aren’t convinced college is worthwhile, despite what so many studies prove about the positive outcomes of a college degree.

These trends reinforce a truth widely understood by leaders in every sector, from corporations to nonprofits: Adaptation isn't optional; it's essential.

Russell Sage College, established in 1916, and Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, established in 1881, have successfully adapted and evolved many times over the years — through wars, Prohibition, the Civil Rights Movement, shifting economic cycles and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The merger agreement the institutions signed this month demonstrates our continued strategic embrace of change.
