Bassett: Berliner edges Cavotta to capture 12th Donald Ross Classic

Scott Berliner held off A.J. Cavotta in the Donald Ross Classic at Glens Falls on Monday, winning in a playoff and capturing the event for the 12th time. But defending the 36-hole championship on his home course wasn’t easy this time.
Berliner’s par on the playoff hole — the 147-yard par 3 18th — secured the win after both players finished 36 holes at 4-under. It was his fourth time competing in a playoff to finish off the 36-hole Northeastern New York PGA tournament; he lost his first one but won the next three. He won by seven strokes last year, a tournament record.

On Sunday, Berliner carded seven birdies with just two bogeys for a 66 (-5) and a four-shot lead. His 1-over round of 72 (138) on the second day opened the door for Cavotta, who finished 71-67 (138). The players were not in the same grouping on the final day. After a birdie on 12, he had a five-shot lead, according to the live scoring app.
“We were in the first group and we didn’t have anybody in front of us, so we played pretty fast, three hours and 20 minutes. I played with Chris (Sanger) who made a good run coming in towards the end. Scott Battiste from Eagle Crest played great yesterday too, he shot a 66.........
