Bassett: Area collector reveals rare baseball card of MLB umpire Jen Pawol
Jen Pawol umpired more than 1,200 minor-league games before making history on Saturday, Aug. 9, as the first woman to umpire a Major League Baseball game.
Detailed stats from her debut behind the plate in Atlanta on Sunday showed she called 93 percent of balls and strikes correctly, according to Umpire Scorecards, which “places her in the bottom third of umpire performance this season, but very much in line with her peers,” according to USA Today.

Her call up to Major League Baseball generated an outpouring of support and stories about Pawol’s career — which included umpiring Tri-City ValleyCats games.
Tim Wiles of Guilderland was in the stands in Troy when Pawol had the home plate assignment in July of 2017 in a game against the Connecticut Tigers.
“I knew she would be working there that night,” he said, adding that she “went from The Joe to the Show” in a Facebook post that included photos from the game.
