On July 4, President Donald Trump signed the 'Big Beautiful Bill,' the most regressive and irresponsible federal budget in this country's history. The law will shrink the social safety net and add trillions of dollars to the national debt to pay for tax cuts favoring corporations and the wealthy. It is a deeply cruel and selfish plan, which the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office warns will cause millions of people to lose health care and leave struggling households even less able to afford food and other necessities.
In my rural county of 183,000 people, close to a third of our residents depend on Medicaid and its expansion under the Affordable Care Act for health care, and about 18,000 households receive SNAP — food stamps — to afford enough to eat. The Trump budget makes massive cuts to these programs. It will cause needless suffering.
