“What did you hike today?” was a common question at our overnight stays at Adirondack Loj and Johns Brook Lodge. Most guests answered in the form of mountains. They’d climbed Phelps Mountain, Mount Jo, or Algonquin Peak.

Four friends and I had a more involved answer. We were embarking on a four-day lodge-to-lodge loop through the Adirondack High Peaks.

We began at the Upper Works trailhead outside Newcomb, where Day One took us through the wild and somewhat neglected Indian Pass trail to the Adirondack Loj. Then, we proceeded over Mount Marcy to Johns Brook Valley for a stay at the Johns Brook Lodge. Our third day was an easy eight miles through the Klondike Pass back to Heart Lake for another night at the Adirondack........
