Commentary: Help more New Yorkers join in the green-energy revolution

New York has committed to a bold path toward cleaner, healthier and more affordable energy. But for hundreds of thousands of low-income households, that vision remains out of reach due to the hidden barriers to home electrification. Toxic materials like asbestos and lead, outdated energy systems and deferred maintenance often prevent low-income families from accessing energy efficiency and electrification programs. Without help, these residents will remain locked out of New York’s clean and healthy energy future, in toxic homes with rising energy bills.

That’s why passing the Green Affordable Pre-Electrification fund, or GAP Fund (S3315/A2101), is not just important; it’s essential. The fund will cover essential retrofits that are necessary for households to participate in existing energy efficiency and weatherization programs. This........
