Commentary: When one man's grudges set tariff policy, we all pay the price

Jair Bolsonaro, president of Brazil from 2019 to 2023, was called "the Trump of the Tropics." Likewise backed by right-wingers and evangelical Christians, he flaunted his nostalgia for Brazil's 1964-1985 military dictatorship, which tortured and “disappeared” opponents. As president, he promoted profligate destruction of the Amazon rainforest. His insouciant anti-science conduct during the COVID-19 pandemic, like Trump's, added thousands to the death toll.
