Commentary: How to ensure New York's energy efficiency initiatives have the biggest impact

As the Trump administration cuts or freezes federal funding for health care, education, and energy and threatens tariffs that could dramatically increase energy prices, we need New York’s leaders to take immediate action to create a more affordable and sustainable future. Fortunately, the Public Service Commission has a golden opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives through the state’s Energy Efficiency and Building Electrification Programs.
The energy efficiency programs can be a transformative affordability initiative that addresses high energy costs in New York and helps families upgrade their homes with airtight insulation and efficient appliances that save money. In winter, old, drafty homes let in cold air from outside, forcing residents to crank up their thermostat to stay warm. That leads to higher energy bills — but it can be fixed if we upgrade New York’s households with energy efficiency measures.........
