Commentary: Will this be the year the terminally ill get the right to choose death with dignity?

In 2025 there is once again cautious expectation, as there has been each spring for at least a decade, that New York will join the 11 states and jurisdictions in which medical aid in dying is legal. Its champions hope that this year’s legislative session will not end with their hopes again being left on the legislative floor.

In recent years, the growing tide in favor of passage has been noteworthy. Three professional medical societies have now endorsed the legislation. The New York State Academy of Family Physicians, with a membership of 6,000, was the first to offer support in 2017.
