Letters July 25: Roundabouts; destroying nature of Shelbourne corridor
The experiment at Cook Street and Southgate Street is more akin to a crop circle. It is mysterious in its existence to the locals.
Being that it is also small in stature, there is little concern navigating around it, unless turning left from Southgate onto Cook. If the City of Victoria decides to keep this roundabout in place, there should be rumble strips or speed bumps on Cook to warn drivers.
As there is seemingly already a crosswalk at the crop circle-roundabout, it would be extremely logical to have three stop signs. This would then solve the problem, and complement the new three-way stops at Southgate and Quadra streets, and at Cook and Dallas Road.

In 2015, I visited Vimy Ridge. I had to wait a day for my flight home so I walked through one town and into Arras. By late afternoon Arras got busy as expected.
I needed to cross a five-star roundabout but quickly it became clear that I could not predict when a vehicle would come shooting out of that roundabout.
I found the best solution was to walk to the middle of the block to cross that street, that is jaywalk to cross safely, and I had to do that twice to get to the street I wanted to be on.
Roundabouts may move vehicles quickly but very busy roundabouts are almost impossible to safely cross when a pedestrian. We need to accommodate all methods of transportation.

No to Victoria and Saanich. Don’t think all municipalities would agree to one city, so what makes sense to me is:
Esquimalt and Vic West. The rest of Victoria and Oak Bay. Saanich and the Highlands. North Saanich, Central Saanich and the Gulf Islands.
Langford, Colwood and View Royal. Metchosin, Sooke and Jordan River. I apologize if I forgot any areas.

Saanich’s Quadra McKenzie Plan update has been in the news with a lot of spectacle and distraction being created that has overall muddied the water over........
