Editorial: Rustad needs to curb the continuing turmoil in his party
The miseries of B.C. Conservative leader John Rustad march on. Five of his party’s 44-member caucus have resigned or been booted out by Rustad.
This is not good for the province, because our system of government relies on a strong Opposition, a viable alternative to the party in power. These days, the official Opposition offers little more than turmoil.
Nine members of the Conservative executive management committee, including the party president, have called for Rustad to step aside.
In a scathing letter, the signatories give their reason: “As evidenced by sagging poll numbers, memberships, fundraising, shrinking caucus and staff, philosophically inconsistent policy, low morale and perhaps more importantly, a lack of enthusiasm and tepid endorsement from our membership, your leadership has ceased to serve that purpose.”
A new Angus Reid poll shows that half of the voters who supported the Conservatives last year want Rustad gone.
However, a conundrum is also evident in the poll.
