Comment: Victoria's safety plan is too late

A commentary by a community safety practitioner.

The citizens of Victoria finally have a Community Safety and Well-Being Plan. It’s taken the City of Victoria years to act upon the crime and social disorder which has been crippling the downtown.

I suppose the bureaucrats figured they should finally get off their duffs and create a plan.

Mayor Marianne Alto selected 11 ­individuals who would make up their community leaders panel and deliver this plan, including herself and VicPD Chief Del Manak.

There is a big difference between community leaders and community safety experts.

Although each of the leaders chosen is certainly well-credentialled in their respective fields, none of them would be considered community safety experts.

One could argue that Manak is, but, unfortunately, many police officers only see things through their blue lens, which these days can be quite obscured.
