Does Israeli Society Need a Reformation?

Since the events of October 7, 2023, Israeli society has been in the midst of a firestorm.  With implications of a genocide in Gaza, abuse of Palestinian prisoners, and critics blaming the majority of the transgressions to the concept and application of “Greater Israel,” there seems to be only two courses of action.

One, is to deny all accountability of these things, pointing to anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic propaganda coming from the Left and Right both in the United States and internationally.

Second, is self-reflection.

Every society, if it is to remain healthy and vibrant, must have times of self-reflection and a mea culpa moment.

Has Israeli society come to this point?  Is it even willing to consider missteps and national sins?

There are indeed elements in Israel who think so.

Yair Golan, an outspoken critic of Netanyahu, has called Israeli actions in Gaza as “Fighting against civilians…and expelling a population,” echoing terms like “Nakba.”

And he has suffered for it by verbal abuse and threats on his life.
