Despite political tensions between the United States and Canada, the two nations are participating together in the ongoing “Operation Arctic Vanguard” air exercises in the High North.

The United States Air Force has dispatched F-16 Fighting Falcons from Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, to Goose Bay, Newfoundland, and Labrador, Canada, in support of Operation Arctic Vanguard 26-4.2, NORAD recently confirmed.

“During this NORAD operation, Alaskan NORAD Region is operating directly alongside the Canadian NORAD Region to execute critical defense missions across the Arctic, Sept. 13-26,” the service said in a media statement.

The fighters and personnel were deployed to take part in joint operations with NATO partners in “austere conditions.” The operation is a proof-of-concept for the US Northern Command (NORTHCOM) “Nordic Bridge” concept, which seeks to align Arctic operations, training, exercises, and investments into a single, synchronized program alongside NATO and regional allies.
