If Washington won’t lead on climate, New York must

The past few months have made one thing alarmingly clear: we can no longer count on Washington to lead the fight against climate change. The recent heat wave, intense storms, and disastrous flooding have made something else alarmingly clear: we cannot let up the fight against climate change.

Congressional Republicans have passed and then celebrated legislation that guts the clean energy tax credits authorized under the Inflation Reduction Act — a move that erases billions in private investment, thousands of good-paying jobs and some of the key progress the nation has made in cutting emissions. Their self-serving actions undermine all aspects of our energy security. Meanwhile, here in New York, some state lawmakers are also attempting to water down our climate laws under the pretense that we can’t afford to meet them.

If New York is serious about meeting its climate and economic goals, we need to continue expanding clean energy at the local level. That includes supporting solar projects, such as Shepherd’s Run in Copake.
