The Berkshire Fire District is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
The fire district, located in the Town of Johnstown, was formed by a group of concerned residents in 1950 when there was a fire on Oakland Avenue, right outside the city line, and no one to put it out.
“The history is so interesting and complicated in the sense of what the forefathers had to go through and insight to become a district instead of a fire company is amazing to me,” said Deb Finkle, chairman of the anniversary book and a member of the anniversary committee, in a news release. “You see many fire departments now merging together and becoming fire districts.
