Citizens must stand up for democracy
I try to never forget democracy is a clash of ideas and it is supposed to be just that.
So, when I hear someone say, “We elected him, so we get everything our way,” I cringe.
Career politicians are pliable. They believe in what will get them elected — nothing more. It is never an issue until it interferes with democracy.
We citizens must help and make them stand up for democracy. The last time democracy failed, 750,000 people died to remove an economic system of enslavement. One of today’s political issues seems to be immigration, far less complex.
People seem to forget in their anger to immigrants’ that economics determines immigration. If the economy (private business) prospers, workers come. If conditions dictate poor economic conditions, workers don’t come. Simple, isn’t it?
Politicians are just using the immigration issue to get us angry. Politicians have done it many times in the past. Now one party has undermined immigration with “giveaway” programs. The other has appealed to our sense of fear and racism. Why? Because it works for both parties.
I get angry with politicians that use immigration as a political issue. I get angry with politicians that divide us. All immigrants want is work and a better life. All politicians want is to use it as a political issue.
Perhaps we should just let immigration work as it has for hundreds of years.
