GUEST COLUMN: A measured approach to USAID suspension

The recent decision by the Trump administration to suspend USAID is a bold and necessary step in addressing the rampant corruption and misuse of funds that has plagued foreign aid distribution for decades.
Having been born in Zambia and now serving as a college president in the United States, I have had the unique vantage point of seeing both sides of this issue.
I have witnessed firsthand how aid, intended to uplift the most vulnerable, is often squandered by corrupt officials, leaving those in desperate need without relief.
While I firmly support the administration’s decisive action, I urge a more measured approach that balances accountability with compassion.
American taxpayers contribute billions of dollars annually to foreign aid, funds that should be making a tangible difference in the lives of the impoverished.
