EDITORIAL: Respect citizens’ right to access public spaces

Maybe Fonda Mayor William Peeler should spend a little more time reading the Constitution and consulting with local police about the public’s rights of access within a public building.

Had he done that a week ago, he would have avoided a physical confrontation — and a criminal harassment charge — for trying to prevent a citizen from videotaping inside Village Hall.

The mayor has been accused of grabbing the camera of Erie County resident Daniel Warmus and pushing it in his face after Warmus confronted the mayor about signs posted in Village Hall declaring that people needed permission to record and photograph inside the........
