EDITORIAL: No time to wait for Hochul to sign city school speed camera bill

Between the vaccines and the gas pipelines, Gov. Kathy Hochul right now is juggling several important public health and safety issues that will affect everyone in the state.

But one measure she should consider that will affect only Schenectady could have a significant impact on the health and safety of its most vulnerable population — its children.

Awaiting Hochul’s signature is a bill approved by lawmakers earlier this year that would allow Schenectady to set up a five-year pilot program for the installation of speed monitoring cameras in up to 20 school zones.

We often say important legislation is “long overdue.” In this case, it really is — actually two years overdue — as city officials twice failed to get the so-called “home-rule” legislation over to state lawmakers in time for them to pass it before they ended their legislative session in both 2023 and 2024.
