EDITORIAL: No simple solutions to bail system

One of our most complex human institutions is our criminal justice system — an overwrought overwhelmed, incongruous apparatus of complicated laws and complicated situations.

Politicians who purport to solve its problems by offering simplistic solutions and handing down generic edicts serve no one but themselves.

One aspect of the criminal justice system that requires complex solutions is the bail system — in which individuals charged with committing crimes can seek to be set free while they await the outcomes of their cases, as long as they appear for scheduled court appearances and meet other requirements set by the courts.
