Building inspector. The job function is right in the name, like “meter reader” or “trash collector.”

The title is the job. And the job of building inspectors is to conduct inspections to ensure that existing buildings, and buildings under construction, are in compliance with safety standards, building codes and standard construction practices.

They are not there to act as immigration enforcement agents.

They are not there to harass and intimidate residents and businesses by abusing the power of their positions and going beyond their job description.

So it’s disturbing that Schenectady city officials still have not released any findings on a report from July - more than three months ago - that the city building inspector, in a visit to a local construction site, made a 911 call to report that he suspected a roofing........
