Gov. Kathy Hochul has an opportunity to help promote better wildlife management in the state; encourage more people to participate in hunting; expand the sales of sporting equipment; and consolidate and clarify state hunting regulations — all with one swipe of her pen.

All she has to do is sign a bill (A8330A/S6360) that would expand the use of crossbows in the state by allowing them to be used wherever and whenever longbows are permitted.

The legislation essentially would reclassify crossbows into the category of “longbows,” which includes longbows,........
