Try this little experiment. Set the stopwatch on your phone for 2 minutes and start reading one of our national columnist’s columns out loud.

They’re each anywhere from 850 to 1,000 words. In 2 minutes of reading at a normal pace, you’ll probably get about halfway through before the timer goes off.

For professional columnists, who are well practiced at condensing their thoughts in as little space as possible, it means they wouldn’t be able to fully and effectively make the point they’re trying to make in 2 minutes of reading it out loud.
