EDITORIAL: Albany right to reconsider residency requirement for employees

Change is good. Or at least it can be when it’s done right.

The pandemic that started five years ago reminded us of that by forcing us to change many preconceptions of the way we do things.

Being forced to stay at home during lockdowns changed the way we look at remote work. Lockdowns and social distancing led to greater acceptance and expansion of mail-in voting.

Government bodies found that by live-streaming their meetings and inviting comments online, more of their citizens were able to participate.

Change isn’t always good. But it can be if it leads to improvements in operations and in people’s lives.

That’s why it’s encouraging that the city of Albany is rethinking its longstanding practice........
