Stocks plunge to start week as Trump digs in on tariffs

The stock market kicked off the week with more steep losses after President Trump spent the weekend defending his new tariffs amid growing blowback at home and abroad.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened Monday down 1,104 points, falling 2.9percent after the opening bell. The S&P 500 index was down 3.3 percent and the Nasdaq composite was down 3.9 percent as the market opened.
