JetBlue raises checked baggage fees amid soaring fuel prices

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – JetBlue is raising its checked baggage fees, citing increased operational costs.

The move also comes amid rising economic uncertainty and spiking oil prices in the month since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran.

“As we experience rising operating costs, we regularly evaluate how to manage those costs while keeping base fares competitive and continuing to invest in the experience our customers value,” JetBlue said in a statement.

The airline still allows passengers to bring on a free carry-on bag and a personal item. If they want to check a bag, the price will depend on whether or not they’re traveling during “peak travel dates.”

The following dates are considered “peak” times, according to JetBlue:

August 2026: 8/1-8/31

September 2026: 9/1-9/9

October 2026: 10/10-10/14

November 2026: 11/19-11/30

December 2026: 12/17-12/31

January 2027: 1/1-1/18

February 2027: 2/11-2/22

On those dates, travelers will pay $49 to check a bag, up from $40. During non-peak times, the cost of checking a bag is $39, up from $35.

If paying to check a bag less than 24 hours before departure, customers will also be charged an additional $10 fee.

“Adjusting fees for optional services used by select customers, such as checked baggage, allows us to continue offering more competitive fares while delivering the onboard experience our customers love, including complimentary snacks and drinks, unlimited, high-speed Wi-Fi and seatback entertainment screens,” JetBlue’s statement read. “While we recognize that fee increases are never ideal, we take careful consideration to ensure these changes are implemented only when necessary.”

There are some exemptions to the checked baggage fee, such as customers with JetBlue credit cards or those with elite status in the airline’s loyalty program.

More information about JetBlue’s checked bag policy can be found on the airline’s website.
