New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D) said Monday that she received a “closely controlled and limited tour” of a federal immigration detention facility in Newark, N.J.
“After being denied access for weeks, I was finally allowed into Delaney Hall – but what I received was a closely controlled and limited tour of the facility,” Sherrill said in a written statement. “That is unacceptable.”
The Hill has reached out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for comment.
Sherrill, who took office in January, added that federal officials did not allow her to meet or speak directly with detainees at the facility. That, she said, raises “serious questions about the real conditions of the facility and the treatment of those held there.”
Last week, the state sued The GEO Group — which operates Delaney Hall. The lawsuit, filed in Superior Court in Essex County, asks a judge to grant the New Jersey Department of Health........
