Trump announces Israel-Lebanon 3-week ceasefire extension
President Trump announced Thursday that the U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon will be extended by three weeks following talks at the White House.
Trump posted news of the extension on Truth Social following a meeting at the White House that included “high ranking” representatives from Israel and Lebanon in addition to Vice President Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee and U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa.
“I look forward in the near future to hosting the Prime Minister of Israel, Bibi Netanyahu, and the President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun. It was a Great Honor to be a participant at this very Historic Meeting!” the president wrote.
Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon earlier this month following what he called “an excellent conversation” with Netanyahu and Aoun. The two sides met again Thursday.
The ceasefire was considered a positive step that could impact talks between the U.S. and Iran.
The original ceasefire struck earlier this month between the U.S. and Iran grew fragile after Israel launched more strikes against Hezbollah, a militia backed by Iran, in Lebanon. Iran and Pakistan, who played the role of mediator, said Lebanon was part of the initial ceasefire, but the U.S. and Israel said otherwise.
The ceasefire is aimed at stopping Israel from targeting Hezbollah in an effort to prevent civilian deaths.According to The Associated Press, Hezbollah rejected the talks and said it will not follow any agreements that are reached in the direct talks.
A second round of talks between the U.S. and Iran did not take place in Islamabad earlier this week as expected, after Trump announced he was extending Washington’s ceasefire with Tehran indefinitely.
However, tensions continue to simmer between the two countries, particularly over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said earlier Thursday that he directed the U.S. military to “shoot and kill” any boat caught putting mines in the waterway.
