U2 releases song ‘American Obituary’ honoring Renee Good
U2 is releasing a musical tribute to Renee Good, the 37-year-old mother killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis, saying that “the power of the people is so much stronger than the people in power.”
The song, “American Obituary,” is part of a six-track EP, “U2 Days of Ash,” released Wednesday by the band.
Good was killed last month after an ICE officer fired into her SUV during the Department of Homeland Security’s immigration crackdown in Minnesota.
Some of the U2 song lyrics include lines such as: “Renee Good born to die free, American mother of three. Seventh day January, a bullet for each child, you see.”
In the tune’s chorus, frontman Bono sings, “What you can’t kill can’t die, America will rise against the people of the lie.”
In a lyric video posted on U2’s YouTube page, images of an American flag, a raised fist, hands making peace signs, and an angel are seen as the band chants, “I love you more than hate loves war.”
Text at the end of the video reads, “Renee Nicole Macklin Good was great.”
In an accompanying digital fanzine, Bono called “American Obituary” a “song of fury… but more than that a song of grief.”
“Not just for Renee but for the death of an America that at the very least would have had an inquiry into her killing… for her family as well as the credibility of law enforcement and the critical role they play in keeping the peace, keeping the citizenry safe,” said the entertainer, who was born in Ireland.
“U2’s been banging on about America most of our artistic life… this is a country we love and has loved us back. Amazingly,” Bono, 65, said.
“Americans for the most part have given U2 and me in particular permission to mouth off… And on this stuff I think people know that I’ve been an equal opportunity pest on the left as well as the right,” Bono said.
In a statement about the song provided by Romanucci & Blandin, the law firm representing Good’s family members, her partner, Becca Good, said, “Renee didn’t just believe in kindness; she lived it, fully and fiercely.”
“She would be deeply moved by this tribute from U2, and would hope it makes a difference in the world,” Becca Good said.
“It is an incredible honor to have the talent and impact of U2 spreading a message of peace in Renee’s name,” Good’s family said in a statement.
The music isn’t the first song from a high-profile performer inspired by Good; in January, Bruce Springsteen released “Streets of Minneapolis.” The rocker said at the time that the song was “dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.”
