US military strikes drug boat in Caribbean, killing 4 ‘narco-terrorists’
The U.S. military struck an alleged drug-trafficking boat in the Caribbean Sea on Wednesday, killing four “narco-terrorists.”
The vessel was operated by a designated terrorist organization, which was transiting along “known narco-trafficking” routes in the Caribbean and was engaged in “narco-trafficking operations,” the U.S. Southern Command (Southcom) said on Wednesday.
It is unclear which terrorist group the military was referring to.
No U.S. service members were injured in the operation, Southcom said, which shared the 15-second video of the strike.
Since Sept. 2 last year, the U.S. military has conducted a minimum of 47 strikes and has killed at least 167 “narco-terrorists” in both the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific. The Trump administration has said the boat strikes are helping curb the flow of illicit drugs in the region, while law-of-war experts have argued that the lethal attacks violate international law.
The Wednesday strike marks the first drug boat operation this month in the Caribbean.
Last week, the U.S. military struck a purported drug-smuggling vessel in the Eastern Pacific, but all three individuals survived. The Coast Guard later said that the two individuals were found dead and one was alive. All three were transferred to the Costa Rican Coast Guard.
