Major bridge near Tehran hit as Trump threatens to escalate war
The biggest bridge in Iran was struck on Thursday as President Trump vowed to escalate the war against Tehran if its leaders do not agree to a peace deal in the coming weeks.
The B1 bridge in Karaj, a city in north-central Iran, was apparently hit twice, with Trump sharing a video of the destruction.
“The biggest bridge in Iran comes tumbling down, never to be used again — Much more to follow,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social, sharing a 10-second video of gray smoke lifting above the bridge.
“IT IS TIME FOR IRAN TO MAKE A DEAL BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE, AND THERE IS NOTHING LEFT OF WHAT STILL COULD BECOME A GREAT COUNTRY,” the president said in the post.
On Wednesday night, in his address to the nation, Trump threatened to destroy Iran’s energy infrastructure and return the country to the “stone ages,” a threat that some legal experts argued could be a violation of international laws.
“I can say tonight we are on track to complete all of America’s military objectives shortly, very shortly,” the president said. “We’re going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks; we’re going to bring them back to the stone ages where they belong. In the meantime, discussions are ongoing.”
Iranian state TV reported that at least two people were killed and several others were injured in the attack on the bridge, which connects the province to Tehran, the nation’s capital.
The Hill has reached out to the U.S. Central Command, which oversees the U.S. military forces in the Middle East region, for comment.
Israel has denied participating in the attack.
