Google to provide AI models to Pentagon for classified work

Google has signed a deal with the Pentagon to provide its artificial intelligence (AI) models for classified work, despite concerns raised by hundreds of employees this week over the terms. 

The Pentagon reached an agreement with Google that would allow the department to use the company’s AI models for “any lawful governmental purpose,” a Pentagon official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss internal dynamics, told The Hill on Tuesday. 

The two parties signed a contract, the official said. 

A Google spokesperson said in a statement to The Hill that it is “proud to be part of a broad consortium of AI labs and technology and cloud companies providing AI services and infrastructure in support of national security.”

The Pentagon’s press office declined to comment. 

The agreement, first reported by The Information, comes nearly two months after the Pentagon blacklisted the artificial intelligence firm Anthropic from classified government work over a disagreement on safety guardrails.
