Trump: Tiger Woods seeking treatment a ‘good thing’

President Trump is voicing his support for golf superstar Tiger Woods after the five-time Masters champion announced this week he is stepping back from the game to focus on his health.

Woods announced on Tuesday he was stepping away from golf “for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.”

“This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery,” Woods said just hours after pleading not guilty to DUI following a rollover crash in Florida last week.

Woods was arrested after crawling out of his car’s side door window following last week’s crash and police said he “did exemplify signs of impairment” at the scene.

“It’s a good thing that he’s doing, but he’s going to end up being terrific. He’s a great guy,” Trump told Reuters. “He’s one of the greatest people I’ve known. He’s a great champion … he’ll be fine.”

Woods has battled injuries and struggles with his health for years. A crash in 2021 during which he was driving twice the speed limit nearly led to the amputation of his leg.

One of the most decorated pro golfers in history, Woods has not competed in a major event since the 2024 Open Championship, and sparked headlines when he suggested he was preparing to play in the Masters later this month.

He also is a leading member of the PGA Tour’s future competition committee, a role the tour said he would step back from following last week’s incident.

Trump, an avid golfer, has spoken glowingly about Woods in the past and awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom during his first term.
