What timing: Trump is already experiencing significant backlash for posting an AI photo earlier this week depicting himself as Jesus. He later took down the post, though he denied it was due to the criticism he received from religious conservatives. He claimed he thought it was a photo that showed him as a doctor.

Vice President Vance advised the pope to “be careful” when he talks about “matters of theology,” criticizing Pope Leo XIV for his disapproval of the war in Iran.

The pope has said that Jesus is “never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs,” but Vance, who converted to Catholicism, argued the pope is not taking some wars into account.

“Was God on the side of the Americans who liberated France from the Nazis? Was God on the side of the Americans who liberated Holocaust camps and liberated those, those innocent people, you know, those who had survived the Holocaust? I certainly think the answer is yes,” Vance said in Georgia on Tuesday.

Another threat to fire Jerome Powell:

President Trump threatened to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell if he refuses to resign from the Fed at the end of his term.

Is this a possibility?: Well, Powell’s term ends on May 15. But there’s a pending Justice Department investigation into the Fed that could delay Trump’s pick to replace him. In the meantime, Powell could remain as the Fed chair, which is the usual precedent for this situation. Powell has even said he will not step down until a successor is confirmed, though Trump clearly does not like that idea.
