Progressive groups launch ad on Earth Day hitting Republicans over gas prices, EVs

Progressive groups launch ad on Earth Day hitting Republicans over gas prices, EVs

Two progressive groups are launching a new eyebrow-raising ad attacking Republicans over gas prices and electric vehicles (EVs) to coincide with Earth Day, as the war between the U.S. and Iran has hit consumers’ pocketbooks at the gas pump.

Progressive Action Fund and Energy Everywhere launched a new $500,000-backed ad buy on Wednesday, first shared with The Hill, showing two workers at a gas station, with one of the men touting his new EV to the other.

“Hey bro. Check out my new truck,” one of the men says in the ad.

“Oh, is she good on gas?” the other says, before the first one replies, “Nah, it’s electric — gas is too expensive.”

As the two men walk up to the EV truck, a generic Republican congressman is shown urinating on the truck, angering both workers.

“I’m your Republican congressman. Big Oil gives me millions, so I’m killing electric cars,” the generic Republican says as he urinates on the truck.

“Come on, man, I just got this truck!” the first worker says.

“I won the last election. This truck is mine,” the congressman replies. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to shake this one out.”

The progressive groups’ ad is slated to air in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa and North Carolina on streaming, connected TV and digital.

“Americans are furious about high gas prices and how Republicans keep blocking clean energy solutions. When you get an electric truck, you never have to pay for gas again,” Energy Everywhere spokesperson Jamie Henn said in a statement.

“We need politicians who are making those electric vehicles more affordable, not pissing all over them,” Henn added.

The U.S.-Iran war has put a strain on gas prices since the Trump administration started its military operation in late February. The conflict has also divided Republicans within President Trump’s MAGA coalition, as Trump has previously vowed against military intervention in other countries and campaigned on an “America First” platform.

The U.S. and Iran reached a temporary ceasefire earlier this month, before the president said on Tuesday he would extend it until Iran offers a proposal in their negotiations.

“Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Trump has been mired in low approval ratings in recent weeks, including over his handling of the economy. Both parties are keenly aware that affordability and the economy will be driving factors of this November’s midterms. Democrats are hoping the fall elections will serve as a referendum on Trump and his policies.

“This isn’t some stuffy climate debate between a couple of woke professors at DEI U,” Progress Action Fund founder and executive director Joe Jacobson said in a statement, whose group has also made the viral “Republicans in Your Bedroom” ad over abortion access.

“This is about families who can’t afford the basics because of rising gas prices and the loss of good-paying American manufacturing jobs. This is Trump pissing on every American.”
