Over half of Florida voters say mid-cycle redistricting is ‘bad idea’: poll

More than half of Florida voters say that a mid-cycle redistricting that GOP state lawmakers are mulling over is a “bad idea,” according to a new poll.

An Emerson College Polling survey released on Thursday found 56 percent of respondents saying that a mid-decade redraw of Florida’s congressional map was a bad idea, while 44 percent said it was a good idea.

About two-thirds of both Democrats and independents polled — 65 percent and 64 percent respectively — said it was a bad idea. Meanwhile, 43 percent of Republicans polled said it was a bad idea, while 57 percent said it was a good idea.

Florida lawmakers are expected to convene for a special session later this month to redraw the Sunshine State’s map as Republicans look to pick up a few additional House seats ahead of the midterms.

Virginia will be holding a referendum around the same time, asking voters if Democratic lawmakers can redraw the state’s map to give the party a 10-1 edge in its congressional delegation. Right now, Democrats have a 6-5 edge in the Old Dominion delegation

The Emerson College Polling survey is notable in that it shows a clear majority of respondents disapproving of Florida’s expected mid-cycle redistricting. Democrats are all but expected to contest the new map, pointing to the state Constitution’s Fair Districts Amendments, which includes clear anti-gerrymandering language.

Recent polling suggests that redistricting in Virginia may not be popular, either. A poll from the Institute for Policy and Opinion Research (IPOR) at Roanoke College released in February showed 44 percent saying they would vote to adopt the new House map proposed by Democratic lawmakers, while 52 percent said they would vote to keep the current redistricting process.

A poll from Christopher Newport University released in January, meanwhile, found 51 percent of respondents supporting a temporary redraw of the Old Dominion’s congressional lines while 43 percent said they did not support it, and a separate 7 percent said they didn’t know.

The Emerson College Polling was conducted between March 29 and March 31, with 1,125 likely Florida voters surveyed. The margin of error is 2.8 percentage points.
