Texas hosting three matchups in Round of 32 at FIFA World Cup

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Canada kicked off the Round of 32 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with some flair Sunday in Los Angeles, scoring in the second minute of second-half stoppage time to beat South Africa 1-0 for the nation’s first knockout round victory.

The tournament’s expansion from 32 to 48 teams created an extra knockout round in hopes of giving countries moments like this. With 15 matches left in the round, Texas plays host to three of them, so a Lone Star State stadium could be the site of an historic victory.

Outside of Sunday’s opening match, the Round of 32 features three matches per day from Monday through Friday.

AT&T Stadium in Arlington, renamed Dallas Stadium for the World Cup, will hold a pair of matches, while Reliant Stadium (Houston Stadium to FIFA) gets one. Brazil faces Japan in Houston at 8 p.m. CT Monday, and Ivory Coast makes its first knockout round appearance against reigning English Premier League Golden Boot winner Erling Haaland and Norway at noon Tuesday.

The last match of the round pits Australia against Egypt, featuring international superstar Mo Salah, at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

8 p.m. Monday, Houston Stadium: Brazil (5) vs. Japan (17)

Brazil won Group C on the strength of its 6-3 goal differential over Morocco, while both teams tallied seven points........
