Gas prices jumped 10 cents (or more) overnight in these states, data shows

(NEXSTAR) – You may have noticed some sticker shock while driving into work on Tuesday. The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline jumped 11 cents overnight, according to the motor club AAA.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said the spike (which his data indicated was a 12-cent increase) is the largest single-day rise since Russia invaded Ukraine four years ago. Back then, the national average remained above $4 a gallon for roughly five months and even briefly surpassed $5.

De Haan, however, said in a Tuesday morning post to X that he does “not (at this time) [foresee] the national average price of gasoline hitting $4/gal anytime soon.”

Gas prices had already been climbing before the U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Iran last week as refiners switched over to the more-expensive summer blends of fuel. Rising crude futures – on Tuesday, futures soared to levels not seen in more than a year – are more to blame for the overnight price hike.

The price of crude is the single largest factor in how much U.S. drivers pay for fuel. And higher oil prices are usually felt at the pump within a couple of weeks at most.

A Nexstar analysis of AAA data found that, from Monday to Tuesday, nearly 30 states saw the average price of a gallon of gas increase by at least 10 cents. In three states, the price jumped by more than 20 cents.

These states saw the largest increase in gas prices over the last day, according to AAA:

Ohio, up 23 cents $3.004

Georgia, up 22 cents to $3.010

Indiana, up 20 cents to $2.999

Florida, up 19 cents to $3.068

Iowa, up 18 cents to $2.809

Washington state saw the smallest day-to-day rise in prices at just one cent, up to $4.381. The average price for a gallon of regular gas is the highest in California at $4.674, per AAA.

The week-over-week jump in gas prices is much higher for several states.

Sitting at the top of that list is Wisconsin, where AAA data shows the average price for regular gas is up roughly 33 cents since last week, hitting $2.863 a gallon on Tuesday. Wisconsin is one of 15 states that have seen the average price for a gallon of gas jump by at least 20 cents week-to-week.

The interactive map shows how much the cost of a gallon of gas jumped since Monday in each state, as well as how the current cost compares to this time last week, according to AAA data.

It’s not yet clear when gas prices could come back down. The widening war in Iran has ground tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz to a halt, highlighting the important role the narrow passageway plays in global energy supply.

The Strait of Hormuz is the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes. Tankers traveling through the strait, which is bordered in the north by Iran, carry oil and gas from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE and Iran. Most of that oil goes to Asia.

While there are pipelines in Saudi Arabia and the UAE that can avoid the passage, the U.S. Energy Information Administration says “most volumes that transit the strait have no alternative means of exiting the region.”
