Fifteen years ago, Nivrutti Shinde (93) made a promise to his wife, Shantabai. He promised to buy her gold. The couple hail from the Ambhora Jahagir in Jalna district. Their earnings from farming go into meeting their daily needs. Buying gold was a distant dream.

But Navrutti, a man of his word, had been saving up all these years so he could someday fulfil his promise. And he did — with Rs 20!
