Swindon reacts to fears of merger with Royal Wootton Bassett

Fears have been raised about the merger of Swindon and the nearby town of Royal Wootton Bassett, after plans for homes were approved.

The 410 houses will be built on agricultural land behind Sally Pussey's Inn in the east of Royal Wootton Bassett, after a Wiltshire Council planning meeting last week.

On the Adver's Facebook page, people said:

Some, such as Andrew Robbins, suggested that "Royal Wootton Swindon has a ring to it", while Merrett Simon put forward: "Royal Swindon-Bassett?"

Kevin Crookes said: "I’ll bet the people in the villages of Stratton St Margaret and Haydon Wick felt the same years ago."

Replying, Rob Davey said: "I’m 66, and can’t remember Stratton, or Haydon Wick, ever not being a part of Swindon. Shaw, Purton, and Lydiard, those I can remember cycling out to, as my Aunt used to live in Shaw. That was before 'West Swindon' was all built. Even Toothill wasn’t there back then."
