Swindon town centre: Readers discuss empty shop unit

News of a town centre landlord’s five-year struggle to find long-term tenants for the largest unit on The Parade sparked a lot of discussion.

A recent planning application, which proposes turning the old Topshop store into an adult gaming centre, explained why this alternative use had to be found for the space.

This proposal highlights the need for alternative uses for the space, as efforts to attract well-known brands like Ikea and McDonald’s have not met with success.

According to the landlord, there have been no offers or viewings despite reaching out to various potential tenants, including supermarkets and gyms.

Local residents have expressed their thoughts and ideas on how to revitalise the area.

Gareth Davies suggested a creative approach: "Let me do a pop-up roller disco.

"That would bring some people in."

Meanwhile, Debbie Chandler pointed out a significant concern: "Maybe look at the ridiculous rent."

Julia Cain echoed this sentiment, simply stating, "Make it cheaper."

Ricky Lam offered a more strategic perspective.

He emphasised the importance of a leasing strategy that would attract visitors to the town.
