Swindon MPs' support for abortion law change sparks debate
Swindon MPs being among the politicians who voted to decriminalise abortion led to a debate among Adver readers.
Will Stone, MP for Swindon North, and Heidi Alexander, MP for Swindon South, backed the amendment brought by Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi during the third reading of the Crime and Policing Bill, which passed with a majority of 217 on Wednesday, July 17.
The amendment would remove the threat of investigation, arrest or prosecution for women who end their own pregnancies, decriminalising abortion for those who self-manage the process.
The Government took a neutral stance, allowing MPs a free vote on the matter. The Crime and Policing Bill will now be considered by the House of Lords.
