A protest held in Swindon’s town centre to show solidarity with transgender people received a lot of support and some hateful comments.

Swindon and Wiltshire Pride arranged a gathering at Regent Circus on Sunday to demand basic human rights for trans people as well as more understanding from GPs and politicians.

This followed a recent ruling by the UK Supreme Court means that transgender women, even those with Gender Recognition Certificates, are not legally recognised as women in the context of the Equality Act.

Some Adver readers publicly supported their efforts in Facebook comments on a post about the Adver article covering the protest.

Dean Draper said: “Solidarity.”

Rebecca Clements said: “Trans ally and proud. Freedom means just that. It's not a pick and mix selection, like many on the far right would lead you to believe.”

Andrew Marshall said: “Good work, very pleased to see public support for trans people.”

Sam Reed said: “We need more trans in Swindon, we love you.”

Lara Taylor said: “Trans rights are human rights.”

Several others wrote comments, which we are not reprinting, that........
