News of a school sending pupils home due to the extreme heat started a discussion about whether more schools should have done the same.

Dorcan Academy allowed students to wear PE kit on Tuesday and sent them home at 1pm as temperatures reached 30C amid hours of scorching sunshine.

Ros TN said: “We went to school whether hot or cold, rain or shine. No time off for us.

“I remember working for a big company in the town centre and when the air conditioning broke we had to suffer whilst waiting for a new unit to come from France.”

Sonia Garcia replied: “Yes but we were allowed windows open, now they can't always do that.”

Andy Harrison said: “Attended both Penhill Secondary and Headlands. Ties and blazers had to be worn up until lunch time - and that was during the 1976 heatwave.
