Heated debate after Swindon asylum seekers protests

A protest against housing asylum seekers in a town centre hotel sparked a lot of debate among Adver readers.

Counter-protestors supporting the migrants’ right to be here also gathered near Fleming Way on Saturday morning, with a heavy police presence keeping both groups separate.

The protest group could be heard chanting several refrains such as "send them home", while the counter protestors called out "say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here" – and both joined in insulting Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

No arrests were made and the protest ended peacefully at 4.30pm.

Neil Mercer said: “Well, the Swindon Advertiser have done their best to build excitement for this protest, but a town of 230,000 produced about 100 people for a cause we're constantly told in the media is supported by the majority.

“It seems that the 'legitimate concerns" we're constantly told exist aren't causing that much concern in Swindon.

“And they were drowned........
