Readers react to travellers appearing on Swindon unopened road

The recent arrival of a Traveller group on the unopened £25 million extension of Wichel Way near Swindon’s M4 junction has sparked a wide range of reactions from local residents, many of whom took to social media to share their views.

While some expressed frustration and concern, others highlighted broader issues related to public infrastructure and council decision-making.

The site, which remains closed despite being fully constructed and lit at night, has become a symbol of contested priorities in the area.

Many commenters pointed out the irony of the road sitting unused for years.

Lyndsey Mattinson remarked, “At least someone is using it,” a view echoed by Gavin Williams and Will Crawford, who noted that it was better to see the road occupied than completely idle.

Dominique McMullan raised concerns about the ongoing cost to residents, saying, “We (as council tax payers) are paying for [it] to light up at night.”
