New book uncovers 'compelling' chapter of Newport's social history
A newly published book shines a light on Newport's compelling social history.
'Florence Lock: An Orphan's Letters' is the second book by the authors, Paul L. Davies and his uncle Kevin McCormack, who have a keen interest in genealogy.
The book revolves around the life of Florence Lock, the youngest of five siblings born to John Lock, a stonemason who migrated to Newport during the construction of Alexandra Dock.
Residing at the original Waterloo Tavern, he married barmaid Eliza French and settled together at 3 Watch House Parade.
However, tragedy struck in the 1890s when the children were orphaned.
