The role of the Doctor is well-known in British culture.

Doctor Who has been a sci-fi hit for decades, and is now in its 20th year since the reboot in 2005, with the 15th Doctor played by Ncuti Gatwa.

But you may be wondering who played the previous 14 incarnations of The Doctor and where they are now.

Take a trip back in time and take a look at every actor who has starred as the Time Lord.

Hartnell took on the mantle when the show first aired in 1963 and was in the role until 1666.

He died just 12 years later in 1975, aged 67.

The second incarnation was played by Troughton for three years from 1966 to 1969, but he returned to the program three times after his departure in specials.

He died in 1987 in Georgia in the United States also aged 67.

The third Doctor was played by Jon Pertwee from 1970 to 1974, but like Troughton he also returned for special episodes

Pertwee died in May 1996 aged 76.

Tom Baker was the Fourth Doctor (Image: PA) One of the most iconic and memorable actors in the role, Baker has been in the most episodes of Doctor Who, and played the role from 1974 to 1981.

During his period as the star, the original series received its highest viewing figures, and he appeared in the show after leaving the role, most notably in the 50th-anniversary special in 2013 alongside Matt Smith.

Baker now lives in East Sussex at the age of 91 and was made an MBE for services to television in the 2025 New Year Honours.

Davison played The Doctor from 1981 to 1984 and at age 29 was at the time the youngest actor to have played the lead role.

He has reprised his role as the Fifth Doctor and is notably the father-in-law of the Tenth and Fourteenth Doctor David Tennant, of whom he starred alongside in the Time Crash special for Children in Need.

Davison, now 73, and his wife Elizabeth Morton live in Twickenham.
